Pre-intubation checklist

  • Evaluate the patient's ability to breathe
  • Assess for signs of airway obstruction
  • Check for adequacy of ventilation
  • Ensure endotracheal tube is available in appropriate size
  • Check laryngoscope for proper functioning
  • Ensure stylet is properly inserted into the endotracheal tube
  • Place a facemask over the patient's nose and mouth
  • Administer oxygen at a high flow rate
  • Monitor oxygen saturation levels
  • Administer sedative medication as prescribed
  • Administer paralytic medication if necessary
  • Monitor patient's level of sedation and paralysis

  • Measure the tube against the patient's body

  • Attach the blade securely to the laryngoscope handle.
  • Check the batteries in the laryngoscope handle to ensure they have enough power.
  • Replace the batteries if necessary.
  • Turn on the laryngoscope light to check if it is working properly.
  • Test the functionality of the laryngoscope by turning it on and off.
  • Inspect the laryngoscope for any debris or residue from previous intubations.
  • Clean the laryngoscope if any debris is found.
  • Inspect the laryngoscope blade for cleanliness.
  • Apply lubrication if necessary to ensure smooth movement.
  • Ensure the laryngoscope blade is in the correct position and angle for intubation.
  • Make adjustments if needed.
  • Check the laryngoscope blade for any signs of damage or wear.
  • Ensure the blade is sterile by cleaning or replacing if necessary.
  • Inspect the laryngoscope handle for any structural defects or damage.
  • Replace the handle if any defects are found.
