Facility Design and Construction

Ensure that all design and construction plans are in compliance with the latest edition of the FGI Guidelines.

Verify that all architectural and engineering drawings have been reviewed by a qualified healthcare design professional.

Confirm that all building materials and finishes meet the guidelines for infection control and patient safety.

Ensure that the facility design includes adequate space for patient and staff circulation to prevent overcrowding and promote efficiency

Verify that all patient care areas are designed to promote patient comfort and privacy, while also allowing for easy access by healthcare providers

Confirm that all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems are designed to support the specific needs of a healthcare facility, including infection control measures and emergency preparedness requirements

Review the facility design to ensure that it allows for future expansion or renovations, in accordance with the FGI Guidelines

Verify that all construction materials and methods meet industry standards for durability, sustainability, and energy efficiency

Patient Care Areas

Check that patient care areas have adequate space for patient beds, medical equipment, and staff members.

Confirm that patient rooms have appropriate handwashing facilities and storage for personal protective equipment.

Verify that patient care areas have proper ventilation systems and lighting levels.

Ensure that patient care areas have sufficient privacy measures in place, such as curtains or doors for each patient room

Check that patient rooms are equipped with call buttons or other communication devices for patients to easily reach staff

Confirm that patient care areas are designed to minimize noise levels and provide a quiet and calming environment for patients

Verify that patient care areas have designated areas for family members to wait or visit patients

Emergency Preparedness

Ensure that the facility has an emergency preparedness plan in place, as outlined in the FGI Guidelines.

Confirm that emergency exits are clearly marked and unobstructed.

Verify that the facility has emergency power sources and backup systems for critical equipment.

Conduct regular emergency preparedness drills and exercises to test the effectiveness of the plan

Ensure that staff members are trained in emergency response protocols and procedures

Review and update the emergency preparedness plan regularly to reflect any changes in the facility or staff

Coordinate with local emergency response agencies and establish communication protocols in the event of a crisis

Sustainability

Check that the facility incorporates sustainable design principles, such as energy-efficient lighting and HVAC systems.

Verify that the facility has a plan for water conservation and waste management.

Confirm that the facility is designed to minimize environmental impact and promote health and wellness for patients and staff.

Ensure that the facility utilizes renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind power

Verify that the facility has implemented a recycling program for materials used in construction and ongoing operations

Confirm that the facility has policies in place to promote sustainable practices among staff, such as reducing paper waste and promoting energy conservation

Check that the facility is certified by a recognized green building certification program, such as LEED or Green Globes
