Checklist for infection control (observing wound care)

Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water

Position patient comfortably and ensure they have access to call bell or assistance if needed during the procedure

Check for signs of infection (redness, swelling, warmth, pus)

Evaluate the depth of the wound

Examine the surrounding skin for any signs of breakdown or irritation

Note any drainage or odor coming from the wound

Assess the level of pain reported by the patient

Evaluate the overall condition of the wound bed (healthy, granulating, sloughing)

Clean the wound with saline solution or wound cleanser

Apply antiseptic ointment if necessary

Cover the wound with appropriate dressing

Gently pat the wound dry with sterile gauze

Apply a moisture barrier around the wound to protect the surrounding skin
