Blood pressure check off guidelines
Pre-Check Preparation
Ensure the patient is seated comfortably in a quiet environment for at least 5 minutes.
Confirm that the patient has not consumed caffeine, exercised, or smoked within the last 30 minutes.
Gather necessary equipment: sphygmomanometer, stethoscope, and alcohol swabs.
Equipment Check
Choose an appropriate-sized cuff for the patient's arm.
Patient Positioning
Ensure the patient's back is supported and feet are flat on the floor.
Position the arm at heart level, resting on a table or armrest.
Ensure the cuff is applied directly to the skin, with no clothing underneath.
Taking the Blood Pressure
Wrap the cuff snugly around the upper arm, ensuring the lower edge is about 1 inch above the elbow.
Locate the brachial artery using palpation.
Inflate the cuff to 20-30 mmHg above the expected systolic pressure.
Slowly deflate the cuff while listening for the Korotkoff sounds.
Record the systolic pressure (first sound) and diastolic pressure (last sound).
