Preparation

Replace the oil filler cap securely
Final Steps
Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes
Check for any leaks around the oil filter and drain plug
Turn off the engine and check the oil level using the dipstick
Dispose of the old oil and filter properly at a recycling center
Documentation
Record the date and mileage of the oil change for future reference
Note the type and amount of oil used for your records
