Check the oil in your car
Preparation
Park the car on a level surface
Turn off the engine and let it cool for a few minutes
Opening the hood
Pull the hood release lever inside the car
Locate the hood latch and release it
Raise the hood and secure it with the prop rod
Locating the dipstick
Locate the oil dipstick, usually labeled with a bright handle
Pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean with a rag or paper towel
Checking the oil level
Reinsert the dipstick all the way back into the tube
Pull out the dipstick again and observe the oil level
The oil level should be between the two marks or within the cross-hatched area
Inspecting the oil quality
Check the color of the oil, it should be amber or brown
Check for any metal particles or debris in the oil
Smell the oil for any burnt or unusual odors
Adding oil (if necessary)
If the oil level is low, add the appropriate type of oil
Use a funnel to prevent spills
Recheck the oil level after adding oil
Closing the hood
Lower the hood gently and make sure it is securely closed
Remove the prop rod and place it back in its holder
Press down on the hood to ensure it is properly latched
Cleaning up
Dispose of any used oil and wipe any spills or drips
Close the hood and double-check for any tools or rags left in the engine bay
Record keeping
Record the date and mileage of when the oil was checked
Keep track of any maintenance or oil changes in your vehicle's maintenance log or app
