Fire Door Function Checklist
This checklist is designed to assist the Responsible Person in conducting and documenting functional inspections of fire doors. Refer to certification documents to verify the specific compliance requirements for each door. Complete a separate checklist for every fire door inspected. In accordance with the recommendations outlined in BS 9999:2017, all fire doors in non-domestic premises should undergo inspection every six months.
1. Door Gaps
Check that the gap between the door and frame is between 2mm and 4mm at the top and sides.
Confirm that the gap at the bottom of the door does not exceed 8mm - 10mm. For smoke-controlled doors, ensure the gap is no more than 3mm.
2. Seals & Protection
[ ] Intumescent strips are continuous, undamaged, and correctly installed.
[ ] Smoke seals are present and effective.
[ ] Glazed vision panels use fire-rated glass and are properly sealed.
3. Hinges and Ironmongery
Ensure there are at least three securely fitted hinges, with all screws intact and of the same size.
Inspect hinges and ironmongery for any visible damage, oil leaks, or missing screws.
4. Door Closer Functionality
Check the door closer for signs of damage or disengagement.
Test the door closer to ensure it shuts and latches the door from any position, particularly from 75mm from the closed position.
Confirm that the door closer fully shuts the door within 25 seconds from any position.
5. Door and Frame Condition
Examine the fire door for visible damage, ensuring door leaves are not structurally compromised or excessively bowed.
Verify that the door does not protrude more than 1mm from the frame.
Inspect the frame for visible damage, including dents or missing pieces.
6. Fire-Rated Features
Verify that any ventilation grilles, where fitted, are fire-rated. Consult a competent person if unsure.
If a smoke-resistant transfer grille is present, ensure it has been tested with the alarms for proper function.
7. Hold Open Devices
Check that any hold-open devices allow the door to close when the fire alarm sounds.
Ensure fire doors are not tied, propped, or wedged open. Address any evidence of this through user education or by installing legal devices like fire door retainers.
8. Locks, Latches, and Handles
Verify that locks, latches, and handles operate correctly and meet fire-rated requirements.
9. Glazing and Vision Panels
Inspect all glazing (vision panels) for compliance with fire-rated glass specifications and ensure proper sealing.
10. Signage
Confirm that correct fire door signage (e.g., “Keep Shut” signs) is visible and in good condition.
If you are unsure about any part of the inspection process, or if repairs are required, seek guidance from the door manufacturer or consult a certified fire door specialist. All repairs should be carried out by competent personnel to ensure continued compliance with fire safety regulations. Never attempt to modify or repair a fire door or its components without professional advice, as incorrect repairs may compromise its performance in the event of a fire.
