Preliminary Steps
Ensure the environment is safe and well-lit.
Confirm the patient's identity.
Explain the procedure to the patient, if conscious.
Initial Observation
Assess the patient's level of consciousness (alert, drowsy, unresponsive).
Observe the patient's breathing pattern (effort, rate, depth).
Look for signs of respiratory distress (use of accessory muscles, nasal flaring, cyanosis).
Airway Inspection
Position the patient appropriately (supine or sitting, as necessary).
Check for any visible obstructions in the mouth or throat (foreign bodies, secretions).
Assess the tongue position (protruding, falling back).
Airway Maneuvers
If necessary, perform a jaw-thrust maneuver to open the airway.
Consider a chin lift if there are no spinal injury concerns.
Use suction if there are secretions or vomit obstructing the airway.
Auscultation
Listen for breath sounds over the trachea and lungs.
Identify any abnormal sounds (wheezing, stridor, gurgling, or absence of breath sounds).
Further Assessment
Use a pulse oximeter to assess oxygen saturation levels.
Monitor for any changes in respiratory rate or effort.
Evaluate for the presence of any abnormal lung sounds during breath assessment.
Documentation
Record all findings in the patient's medical record.
Note any interventions performed and the patient's response.
